Resurgence: July 1, 2020
United States
Over the past several weeks, the number of new coronavirus cases have spiked in many states especially those in the south and west of the United States. High numbers were reported in states like Arizona, California, Texas and Florida. Many of these states started reopening their economies.

California
Cases have risen sharply in parts of California recently. Los Angeles County reported a daily record of 2,903 new cases on June 29, bringing the total number there to 100,772, with 3,326 deaths. Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered to close indoor restaurants, wineries, movie theaters and other venues in 19 counties with surging outbreaks. Los Angeles officials have banned all July 4 fireworks displays and ordered beaches closed over the coming holiday weekend.
Texas
In Texas, coronavirus patients have filled about 10% of the state’s hospital beds, and 80% of all available beds are occupied, according to data from the state health department. Gov. Greg Abbott issued a nearly statewide mask mandate July 2 as Texas scrambles to get its coronavirus surge under control. He also banned certain outdoor gatherings of over 10 people unless local officials approve. He had previously set the threshold at over 100 people. There were 8,076 new cases July 1, over 1,000 cases more than the record that was set the prior day.
Florida
On Friday, June 26th, Florida, among the states not mandating masks, reported its highest number of new cases in one day, with close to 9,000. The city of Jacksonville announced on June 29th that coverings must be worn in “situations where individuals cannot socially distance.”
Arizona
Arizona health officials reported 3,858 more confirmed coronavirus cases on June 28, the most reported in a single day in the state so far and the seventh time in the past 10 days that daily cases surpassed the 3,000 mark. Since the pandemic began, 74,500 cases and 1,588 deaths stemming from the virus have been reported in Arizona.
India
The resurgence is not restricted just to the United States. India’s government said schools would stay shut for a further month and restrictions would be extended until the end of July on nonessential services and movement of persons in containment zones—coronavirus hot spots where lockdowns are still in effect. A nighttime curfew will also be kept in place across the country. Confirmed coronavirus cases in India rose by 18,563, pushing up the total number of infections to upwards of 585,000, while the death toll rose to 17,400
China
In China, Beijing municipal health authorities reported on new locally transmitted infections, bringing the total to 325 since a new wave of infections was identified earlier this month.
South Korea
South Korea added 50 new cases wrapping up the month with a total cumulative count of 12,850. The country has suggested staggering employee vacations to avert large crowds in popular areas during the summer.
Australia
In Australia, the premier of Victoria state reimposed stay-at-home orders for four weeks in 10 areas of Melbourne suffering outbreaks. Businesses in those areas that have been able to reopen recently will again face restrictions, and restaurants will be allowed to offer only takeout and delivery services. The premier also said he had asked the country’s prime minister to divert all flights away from Melbourne to other cities for the next two weeks.
United Kingdom
The new coronavirus case was first confirmed in the UK at the end of January. The number of daily confirmed cases and related deaths only began to increase significantly by the second half of March. Lockdown restrictions came into force across the UK at the end of that month. The number of new cases came to a peak mid-April and have been falling steadily since. The UK has the highest official death toll in Europe and the third highest in the world, after the US and Brazil.
On Monday June 28, Public Health England reported Leicester, Bradford, Barnsley and Rochdale as areas with the highest rate of infections in the UK. The government announced it was re-imposing lockdown measures in Leicester, after it was revealed that 140 out of every 100,000 people were testing positive in the week to 21 June, by far the highest in England.
