Arya Ramachandran

My name is Arya Ramachandran it would be an honor and privilege for me to be the treasurer for the MassJCL

What are my qualifications?

Although many might perceive this role to be mundane and monotonous, I beg to differ. The ability to tell your George Washington’s from your Ben Franklin’s is crucial and I’ll let you in on a little secret: we want more of the latter. The job of the treasurer involves handling money and budgeting. As such, it is right up my alley. I am good with numbers and have prior experience fundraising and managing money from my work with the Winchester High School Latin club.

I am also the Business Manager for the Red & Black (my high school’s newspaper), where I single-handedly raised $4500, a record amount. My ongoing responsibilities include sourcing advertisements from local businesses, managing our budget, and recording all the financial transactions - both income and expenses - in a spreadsheet. Transparency is key.

I am extremely responsible and am very meticulous. Managing the organization’s funds is something that I will not take lightly as money provides sustenance for our very existence as the JCL, and I recognize the gravity of that.

My Vision?

I know it is also important for us to determine how to spend our money. This motivates our budgeting decisions. The purpose of our expenditures should help promote and enrich our members` experiences.

We in the Winchester chapter have already taken concrete steps in that direction. In the midst of the pandemic, we gave out water bottles to front-line workers at our local community hospital - an initiative that received first-place in the NJCL. This year I spearheaded a fundraiser, in which we collected items for homeless teens at a shelter. We are also looking to recognize our local school custodians for their tireless commitment to keeping our school environment safe.

As treasurer, I will look at these projects from a financial perspective as that’s the “bottom line.” The more money we raise, the more services we can provide.

Remember, many of the stories and fables written in Latin were about finding treasures. I dare say that money played a big part in the golden age of the Roman empire. So the role of the treasury, and by extension, the treasurer is an important one and one that cannot be filled by just about anybody. I am the man you need! So, spare yourself a treasure hunt. Your treasure-er is right in front!.

Community Hospital Fundraiser

In January 2021, the Winchester High School Latin club did its part to show its appreciation to the front-line workers at Winchester Hospital. As we all know the staff at the Winchester Hospital has been at the forefront of the fight against the virus since last Spring. They have shown extraordinary courage and care during these unprecedented times. Community members recognized their efforts and showered hospital staff with meals, snacks, flowers, gift cards, and more. The Latin Club did its part and delivered water bottles to the front-line workers. They were distributed to the front-line workers when they received their COVID vaccine in their conference center which was set up to administer the vaccines. The gesture was much appreciated and welcomed. They were featured in the Hospital Newsletter and the Winchester Star.

This initiative earned 1st place at the NJCL.

Peers Embracing Peers

The WHS Latin Club is spearheading a service project aimed at providing a gift basket to members of the Wayside Youth & Family Support Network. They provide emergency shelter for homeless teens on a short-term basis. There are five individuals currently at the shelter.

We believe reaching out to kids our age is relatable to many of us.  It also reminds us of how privileged we are, and to be grateful every single day. A small contribution from our side, though not life-changing, would make a huge difference for them. These teens are introverted and are fighting their own personal demons. A small gesture of this sort would brighten their day a little, giving them comfort and reminding them that the world still cares!

MLK Day

Service Learning at Winchester Public Schools and Network for Social Justice celebrated The MLK Day of Service on January 17, 2022. This is an annual event dedicated to engaging the community in social justice issues. The event was held virtual due to the surge in covid cases as a result of the omicron variant. This year's theme was Global Citizenship. The goal was to educate students and members of our community about social justice issues in remembrance and honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. The Latin Club partook in the service project and Arya Ramachandran’s Social Justice Essay won $250 towards a charity of his choice. Latin Club Skits

Arya Ramachandran has participated in the WHS Latin Club skits for the past 2 years. One was an original Latin script to the tune of the title song in the TV show “ Friends.” The second skit was titled “Calamarius Certamen,” which roughly translates to “Squid Games,” the name of a Korean TV show that took the world by storm when it debuted on Netflix last fall. Following the convention’s theme of diversity in antiquity, this dramatic creation commanded recognition for its smart concept, humorous writing, and bold acting. Both skits took first place with their original and spirited work.

Appreciating our Custodians

The custodians’ relentless support throughout the year should not go unnoticed. They are the unsung heroes of our school. We wanted to do something small as a token of our appreciation. The club fundraised snacks and gift cards to honor and thank them for all their work. The group also drew portraits of each of the 11 custodians. Cheers to our “guardian” custodians!

Latin Club Fundraising

The Winchester Latin Club continually tries to hold fundraisers and spearhead other initiatives that help keep the organization afloat. One year, they sold water bottles at the community Spirit Fair.
